The Mirvish Theatre’s ambling story began a hundred years ago, when it opened as the Pantages, a combined vaudeville and motion picture venue. Over the years it has been many things including Toronto’s first multiplex theatre, the Imperial Six. It was restored to its former 1920’s glory in 1989 and later purchased by and named for Ed Mirvish, who was for years the champion and king of the Toronto theatre scene.
What to see at the Mirvish
From April 9 to May 5, the Mirvish Theatre is presenting Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, starring Toronto’s own Chilina Kennedy who returns after performing the show on Broadway for a remarkable four years. The show tells the story of songwriters Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin and their best friends, songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. It’s filled with many of the incredible songs the four of them wrote, including “So Far Away,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and, naturally, the title song “Beautiful.”
